Typical lattice structures are created by voxelizing a solid body and filling each voxel with a lattice cell.
In order to vary material properties among lattice cells, they must either vary in scale, geometry or thickness.
Varying each lattice cell's geometry offers unique material properties than can be produced in a gradient.
